4.1 Identify safety instrumented functions (SIF) before you start estimating the SIL required.
It is important not to neglect the RIS identification phase, as determining the required SIL requires identifying and estimating the frequency of occurrence of the initiating events that will call upon the function. As a result, if the RIS is poorly defined, the identification of initiating events may be flawed or incomplete. In this case, the estimation of the required SIL is bound to be in error.
