2. Select substances

Health risk assessment cannot be carried out for all substances likely to be emitted (cost, lack of data, etc.). In order to carry out a quantitative health risk assessment, a selection of "risk tracer" substances is established. The substances selected ("risk tracers") will be the only ones for which the risk will be quantified.

Hazardous substances can be selected on the basis of the scale of emissions, their harmfulness, their persistence in the environment, their bioaccumulation in the food chain, the particular sensitivity of potential targets, etc.

To select the substances to be included in the health risk assessment for the site under study, selection criteria are defined in line with the recommendations of the Ineris guide.
