4. Our advice

4.1 Keep a margin of uncertainty when calculating the probability of failure to assess the SIL level.

For example, if by calculation the probability of failure (PFD avg ) of a RIS is estimated at 9E-3, it will be prudent to consider the RIS to be SIL 1, even if the minimum SIL 1 level is equal to 1E-2. This approach helps to avoid uncertainties in the input data required for calculations (failure rate, percentage of common cause failures, etc.).
