2. What are "traceability", "connection" and "calibration"?
The VIM (International Vocabulary of Metrology), written and maintained by the BIPM's WG2 working group, sets out the definitions of terms used in metrology. This guide is reproduced in the form of a French standard (NF ISO/CEI GUIDE 99 – August 2011).
Although the term "connection" is often used in everyday applications, it is not defined in the VIM. However, the definition given above (metrological traceability chain) corresponds fairly well to what we generally understand by this concept.
The definition of the metrological traceability chain calls on the notion of "measurement result", which is worth recalling.
Set of values assigned to a measurand, supplemented by any other relevant information available.
