When should I file for a patent?

Because of the requirement of absolute novelty, you need to file your patent as soon as possible, and in particular before any communication about the invention that is not covered by a confidentiality agreement. But it is risky to file before proof of concept has been achieved, as the description could then be defective or the protection could prove inconsistent with the product ultimately exploited. The compromise between these two requirements must be found on a case-by-case basis, depending on the competitive environment in which the invention is being developed. The production of a prototype confirming the product's feasibility is often the appropriate moment.
