1. Understanding the value of theses for scientific intelligence
The doctorate is a national diploma awarded by universities. It recognizes the candidate's ability to carry out original, high-level scientific research. It corresponds to a bac+8 level or higher.
A doctoral thesis is the result of at least three years' research. Theses cover all scientific disciplines, from fundamental to applied research. Many are carried out in laboratories (universities, CNRS, etc.), others in companies (R&D) or in international collaboration. A thesis often reflects the most advanced research.
The content of a thesis is frequently richer than published articles or books. What's more, a thesis is often accessible some months (sometimes years) before its results are published elsewhere.
The advantages of a thesis are threefold, in terms of content, skills and establishment.
