4. What is a plant variety certificate (COV)?

4.1 Plant Variety Certificate (COV)

The plant variety certificate (COV) was established by the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) of December 2, 1961. In France, the COV is governed by article L. 623-1 du Code de la propriété intellectuelle .

As the European Union is also a signatory to UPOV, it is possible, as an alternative, to obtain a Community plant variety right (CPVP) entitling the holder to uniform protection throughout the European Union under
