3. Silk nanofibers

It is now easy to obtain and purify silk protein inexpensively from Bombyx mori cultures. As a result, fibroin from these silkworms is more widely used in biomedical applications than natural spider silk and biotechnologically-derived proteins.

3.1 Extraction and purification of fibroin

There are several methods for extracting fibroin, nevertheless, the most commonly used technique is dialysis. Bombyx mori cocoons are boiled for 30 minutes in a saline solution of sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) at 0.02 mol/L.
