3. Biomechanics and GMCAO scientific challenges

Biomechanical models developed within a CAD/CAM framework come up against the issue of rapidly generating 3D meshes adapted to the patient-specific geometry of the organ. Whether the clinician intends to use the model for planning assistance or intra-operative use, it is out of the question to spend more than a few minutes building this model, given the clinical constraints. While the Mesh-Match-and-Repair technique provides encouraging results, it presupposes that morphological differences between an atlas and the patient's organ are sufficiently small. This assumption is likely to be wrong in the case of patient organs whose geometry is "out of the ordinary" due to a specific pathology (malformation or growths, for example). Other techniques for automatically generating patient meshes will then have to be implemented.
