The field of biomedical materials is constantly evolving. Controlled drug delivery systems are one of the most promising applications for improving human health.

The development of new active molecules and potential treatments, such as gene therapy, is leading to the development of new therapeutic agents and improved delivery mechanisms.

A drug delivery system can be described as a formulation that controls the rate and timing of drug delivery and targets specific areas of the body. Indeed, in some cases, such as cancer chemotherapy, current treatment methods rely essentially on the use of conventional cytotoxic drugs, which have severe side effects and limited efficacy.
