Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is obtained by polymerizing vinyl chloride
monomer (VCM) or monochloroethylene
The synthesis is carried out by a radical route using suitable initiators.
The discovery of this polymerization reaction by French chemist Régnault dates back to 1835.
