3. Structure of amorphous – Comparison with crystalline structures
The reference solid state is the crystalline state.
To describe the disordered structure of amorphous materials, it is useful to refer to the structure of crystals to specify which type of disorder is compatible, or not, with a crystalline state.
3.1 Compatible crystal structures and disorders
An ideal crystal is characterized by the periodic repetition in all three directions of a molecular pattern (figure 3 a)
