A thorough knowledge of botany is the first guarantee of proper quality control. It gives us the necessary hindsight to interpret results correctly.

1.1 Nomenclature and classifications

Because the world of plants is so vast, it's important to be able to name a plant unequivocally. That's what's at stake with the binomial nomenclature proposed by Carl von Linné in XVIII e century.

The latter is based on the characterization of organisms using the binomial "genus species", where the genus is capitalized and the species italicized, followed by the name or initial of the discoverer. This name helps avoid misuse of language (mint may refer to Mentha piperita or Mentha aquatica...
