5. Conclusions and outlook
Since the 1990s, the craze for food supplements, and in particular herbal supplements, has been such that they have become an established part of French consumer habits. That's why, in order to guarantee consumer safety, French regulations have evolved with the publication in the Journal Officiel of the Order of June 24, 2014.
The case of Valeriana officinalis illustrates the new stakes involved. Investment in research and development may be required, as although many plants are described in pharmacopoeias, the methods proposed there may only partially meet the new regulatory requirements.
These new parameters often represent obstacles for small structures which, until this new decree, had few constraints. They now need to acquire the necessary knowledge in the fields of analytical chemistry, phytochemistry and botany.
