The analysis of plants, plant mixtures, plant extracts and plant-based formulations is often a delicate and challenging exercise for the analyst and phytochemist. The aim is often to identify the botanical characteristics of the plant(s) used and/or to detect adulteration, or to identify and quantify molecules of interest (active substances) or substances regulated (restricted) for their toxicity (figure 2 ).
