Overview

ABSTRACT

Polymorphism is the ability of organic and inorganic molecules to exist in different crystalline forms. These crystalline forms exhibit different physico-chemical characteristics. This article will focus on the basic principles of solid-state polymorphic transition, the characterization methods of the transition and the studies of the hydrates and solvates.

 INTRODUCTION

This article focuses on the consequences of polymorphism in the pharmaceutical field.

A first article in Techniques de l'Ingénieur, Polymorphism: Origins and methods [P 1 097] has already given a glimpse of the main consequences expected in this field.

They mainly concern :

  • dissolution kinetics and bioavailability ;

  • manufacturability of the active ingredient and the finished product;

  • the stability of the latter two.

In many of the articles already referenced, these areas are already more or less developed. We shall therefore confine ourselves here to briefly touching on certain aspects. Finally, the consequences of polymorphism in the food and dye industries are briefly examined.

For a more theoretical study of polymorphism, readers can consult the articles [P 1 097] , [AF 3 640][AF 3 641] and [AF 3 642] in Techniques de l'Ingénieur.
