2. Formal information sources

Formal information includes scientific and technical publications, patents and books. This information is generally validated. However, their lifespan is variable, due to the evolution of constraints and standards, and the fact that published information always lags behind current thinking; due to the work and material delays prior to publication, which can take up to a year.

This paragraph deals with two important aspects:

  • One concerns commercial databases, whose cost (payment by bibliographic reference and time spent) can quickly become prohibitive;

  • the other concerns the use of free information, so that, before going on to pay databases (if necessary), you already have a significant knowledge of the subject.
