Launched by IATA as part of its Symplifying the Business program in 2004, RFID has gradually become just another tool for improving baggage performance.
In air transport, we're seeing a gradual adoption of RFID, rather than a big bang. Some airports have included RFID in their five-year vision of infrastructure development, because they see the technology as a promising opportunity. Others, on the other hand, will limit their implementation to the installation of RFID baggage tag printers to supply the hubs of their client airlines.
Analysis of logistics flows is the only way to decide whether to adopt a proactive or wait-and-see approach. Nevertheless, over the next few years, we can expect the 80 biggest airports, which generate most of the traffic and missed baggage, to implement this technology. This...
