The principle of chromatography first appeared in 1903, when botanist Tswett observed the separation of different forms of chlorophyll during the migration of a plant extract on a chalky medium. Work to understand the phenomenon led Martin and Synge (Nobel Prize 1952) in 1941 to define and lay the theoretical foundations of partition chromatography
