4. How to Make the Most of Your Experience

4.1 Alignment

Angular accuracy is essential for interpreting a diffractogram. An adjustment can be made using a direct beam: ensure that when the source and detector are directly opposite each other, the angle is zero. One can also use a reference sample, such as a silicon powder pellet (§ 4.2 ), and calibrate the equipment so that the positions of the standard’s peaks correspond exactly to the expected theoretical positions
