1. Stable isotopes in the natural environment

Many elements show variations in the abundance of their isotopes. Two types of effect are at the root of this phenomenon.

1.1 Natural enrichment with stable isotopes by chemical and/or physical means

Isotopes of the same element differ in their behavior due to different binding and activation energies. As a result, for thermodynamic or kinetic reasons, most chemical and physical reactions lead to the enrichment of one or more phases in one or more isotopes. The light elements show the greatest and best-documented natural variations in their relative isotopic abundances [1][2] .
