3. Liquid scintillation counters

The simplest liquid scintillation counter would consist of a measuring chamber with a vial holder and a photodetector connected to counting electronics. In practice, however, the physical limitations of the available photodetectors mean that the design is generally more complex.

3.1 Photodetectors and measuring chamber

As the liquid scintillation process is highly inefficient overall, the average number of photons emitted can be very low, which means that highly sensitive photodetectors must be used, and the measuring chamber must be optimized to detect the maximum number of light photons emitted.
