2. Scintillator composition

A liquid scintillator is a transformer of ionizing radiation into light. It is essentially composed of a solvent in which a scintillating molecule is dissolved.

Other compounds may be added to tailor the scintillator to particular uses, including a secondary solvent, a secondary scintillator, surfactants, extractants and fillers. The scintillator composition must enable efficient energy transfer between the solvent and the fluorescent molecule. It must also allow coexistence between the radioactive source and the detector medium.
