1. Overview and comparison with other methods

Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) is a new solvent-free method for extracting volatile or non-volatile organic molecules of varying polarity from aqueous, solid or gaseous samples, even in trace quantities. Compounds are extracted by adsorption onto a polymer-coated fused silica fiber. Initially designed in fiber form, the supports have evolved, as has the adsorbent medium, to improve extraction efficiency.

Developed in the late 1980s by Arthus and Pawliszyn (University of Waterloo, Canada)
