9. Design-integrated maintainability and integrated logistics support (ILS)
For existing industrial plants, if it turns out that certain equipment is not sufficiently reliable or maintainable, the only possible alternative is to modify the initial design by installing new, higher-performance equipment. On the other hand, for new industrial installations or new systems, the design phase is the privileged time to act on the cost of ownership by defining in the initial specifications the allocations for reliability, availability, maintainability and safety. This section describes the steps to be taken to ensure that all these considerations are taken into account by the designers, in liaison with the teams subsequently responsible for operation and maintenance.
