7. Financial aspects of tolerancing

It is accepted that 80% of the cost of a part is incurred during its design. The design office must have a budget of hours sufficient to :

  • carry out an in-depth functional analysis of the mechanism ;

  • inventory groups of functional surfaces;

  • rate each functional group internally (is each surface rated in terms of position, orientation, shape, surface state parameters and defined by its mechanical characteristics?

  • rate each functional group in relation to the others ;

  • ensure that the quotation is unambiguous;

  • ensure, during a project review with the other partners, that the specifications are realistic, particularly in terms of tolerances.
