1. Problems encountered with current standards

In this article, texts in italics correspond to quotations from technical report ISO/TR 14638 (Oct. 1996), or from other standards (in which case it is specified which standard is referred to).

For many years, GPS standards were prepared and published by technical committees (ISO/TC 3 "Fitting", ISO/TC 10/SC5 "Dimensioning and tolerancing", and ISO/TC 57 "Metrology and surface properties") as and when specific needs arose, but without a global vision. This has resulted in standards with different approaches and presentations, and sometimes even contradictions. There are also gaps between these standards.

Aware of this, an ISO/TC 213 technical committee on "Dimensional and geometrical product specification and verification" was set up to ensure a convergence of views between the various players. It...
