6. Reduced-scale modeling approach

Despite advances in numerical simulation, experimentation is still essential in many situations, even though it cannot be carried out on the actual structure. The solution is to create a simplified object, possibly on a more convenient scale, or using cheaper, easier-to-use materials. This simplified object, or "mock-up", is then exclusively required to have the same dynamic properties as its real counterpart.

For obvious safety reasons, the dynamics of solid rocket boosters are studied using dynamically similar models made of inert materials. Similarly, for reasons of availability and independence from operational constraints, the dynamics of naval structures are studied on mock-ups or sections, sometimes at 1:1 scale, rather than on units in service with the Navy.
