3. Time distribution

Today, a time distribution network must satisfy a number of functions:

  • transmit time information over large areas to new peripherals: computers, PLCs, etc;

  • program household appliances, such as doorbells, doors and shutters, heating and ventilation systems.

A time distribution system comprises a master clock equipped with a device enabling it to periodically send reference time signals to secondary or receiving clocks. Depending on the number of start modules or time bases, the master clock is referred to as a time center or time centre.
