6.1.1 Principle of eddy current detection

When a conducting body is placed in a magnetic field that varies in time or space, induced currents develop in a closed circuit inside it. These are known as Foucault currents (French physicist 1819-1868).

A coil carrying a variable current, such as an alternating current, generates such induced currents which, in turn, create a magnetic flux that opposes the generating flux, thereby modifying the impedance of the coil....
