3. LED light-emitting insects
Many insects emit light, either by bioluminescence or fluorescence. Once again, there are many reasons for this. In the case of bioluminescence, it's clearly a means of inter- and/or intraspecific communication, and possibly also a means of heating.
In the case of fluorescence, the main function is to protect against UV rays, once again with an application to communication. These functions are obviously vital for organisms, and we're going to see how structures can optimize them.
