Breakfast cereals are a mixture of simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. These carbohydrates provide a good portion of the energy needed for breakfast.

The French population's consumption of carbohydrates, particularly complex carbohydrates, is significantly insufficient, as they only cover around 40% of energy requirements, whereas international recommendations advise 50-55% of total energy intake, limiting the proportion of sugars, mainly sucrose, glucose, and fructose. Eating cereal for breakfast every morning is therefore a good way to ensure that nutritional needs are met. A good breakfast should cover 20-25% of daily energy requirements, or around 500 kcal, with variables to be taken into account (age, gender, physical activity, etc.).
