4. Plant production

In the current sense, the modification of genetic material (or heritage), or transgenesis, in plants dates back to 1973; it involves the transfer of one or more genes belonging to any other species of the animal or plant kingdom, unlike classic hybridization, which only involves the transfer of gene(s) between species of the same kingdom.

Already numerous, the main applications of plant genetic modification aim to develop :

  • tolerance to pests (insects, cryptogamic diseases, viruses, etc.) and stress (drought, etc.);

  • tolerance to certain chemical substances (herbicides);

  • nitrogen synthesis ;

  • nutritional qualities;
