6. Biocides

Biocides are often characterized as pesticides for non-agricultural use, and are used in a wide variety of products including household disinfectants, insecticides, wood treatment products, water and antifouling marine paints. Intended to destroy, repel or render ineffective harmful organisms, biocides are, by definition, active products likely to have harmful effects on humans, animals or the environment.

The active substances used in biocides include micro-organisms that may be genetically modified.

As of October 10, 2008, no marketing authorization had yet been granted for biocides containing genetically modified micro-organisms.
