Created by a decree-law of July 30, 1935, the Comité national des appellations d'origine des vins et eaux de vie became the Institut national des appellations d'origine des vins et eaux de vie in 1947.
It kept this name until 1990.
The economic success of AOCs in the wine and spirits sector, as well as the various changes in European regulations, prompted the legislator to gradually extend the INAO's remit to :
1990: dairy products and agri-food products (AOC),
1999: dairy products and agri-food products (PGI),
2007: red labels, organic farming and traditional speciality guaranteed,
2009: to wines with a protected geographical...
