5. Landfilling in waste disposal facilities

Certain types of contaminated sludge, as well as the residues resulting from their treatment, possess characteristics that classify them as hazardous waste. The same applies to incineration ash derived from sludge containing heavy metals or other toxic substances: this constitutes final waste. The treatment methods typically discussed are not suitable for this type of waste. It is therefore necessary to dispose of it in a landfill specifically designed for hazardous waste.

According to the ministerial decree of December 30, 2002, hazardous waste storage facilities (HWSFs) are facilities designed for the disposal of such waste through placement or burial in or on the ground. These facilities also include sites intended for the temporary storage of hazardous waste.
