5. Mistakes to avoid
5.1 Do not use values defined in BREFs as ELVs
The values defined in the BREFs are not ELVs (exposure limit values) but BATAELs (BAT emission levels). The use of BAT is reflected in the plant's specific regulations (authorization or supplementary prefectoral decree) by the determination of emission limit values. These ELVs also take account of local environmental conditions (atmospheric protection plan, SDAGE, SAGE, etc.) or national planning tools (e.g. national program against pollution of aquatic environments by certain dangerous substances).
