6. Our advice
6.1 Identify in the risk analysis the sources of leaks likely to lead, in the event of ignition, to an attack on the part not wetted by the liquid.
Various tests have shown that the most critical case is thermal attack on the part of the tank in contact with the gas phase. Unlike the liquid phase, the gas phase does not have the capacity to absorb the heat received, so the tank wall will rapidly rise in temperature. This rapid rise in temperature can limit the effectiveness of the main MMR measures generally implemented to prevent a BLEVE (see Step 4, "Shell cooling" and "Valves").
