1. What does sustainable development mean?

The most commonly used meaning is as follows:

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Brundtland Report 1987).

  • Development is the process of improving human well-being. Economic activity and material well-being are essential, but so are health, education, environmental preservation and cultural integrity.

  • The adjective "sustainable" emphasizes the notion of time, i.e. the long-term improvement of everyone's well-being.

Sustainable development (SD) is conceived as a break with other modes of development that have led, and continue to lead, to considerable social, societal and ecological damage, both globally and locally.
