1. What does sustainable development mean?
The most commonly used meaning is as follows:
"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Brundtland Report 1987).
Development is the process of improving human well-being. Economic activity and material well-being are essential, but so are health, education, environmental preservation and cultural integrity.
The adjective "sustainable" emphasizes the notion of time, i.e. the long-term improvement of everyone's well-being.
Sustainable development (SD) is conceived as a break with other modes of development that have led, and continue to lead, to considerable social, societal and ecological damage, both globally and locally.

Social and societal
Many authors use the two terms interchangeably. ISO 26000 refers to corporate social responsibility. When referring to the various approaches described in this data sheet, we recommend using the term societal, which includes all aspects of SD, and using the term social only when referring to interfaces with the organization's personnel.
