5. Flotation

Some waters (lakes and dams in particular) are relatively clear but colored or rich in algae: they therefore require high doses of coagulant without the floc being weighed down by matter initially suspended in the raw water; in such waters, settling is therefore often difficult. One solution is to make them float.

5.1 Principles and basic quantities

The flotation of colloidal suspended solids rarely occurs naturally (except for biological particles, fats, and hydrocarbons), so it must be induced.
