Sludge from wastewater treatment, whether it comes from industrial or municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) or directly from industrial processes, is considered waste. At the European level, waste is defined as "any substance or object which the holder discards or intends or is required to discard." Sludge disposal must comply with strict regulations regarding its classification and composition. If this sludge is certified or meets a specific standard, such as sludge compost that complies with NF U44-095 , they can be reclassified as a product and used in agriculture without requiring a spreading plan.
