3. Techniques for reducing volumes and odor nuisances

Reducing sludge volume helps to limit treatment costs, provided that effective phase separation is maintained to prevent pollutants from returning to the liquid phase. Care must also be taken to ensure that pollutant concentrations do not cause odor nuisance, by preventing fermentation through measures such as containment, ventilation, and, if necessary, deodorization of the areas concerned.

3.1 Main routes

Effective sludge treatment strategies focus on three areas: reducing the volume to be disposed of (by removing water or destroying dry matter), limiting nuisances (odors, pathogens) through stabilization and sanitization, and improving the texture of the sludge to facilitate its transport and storage.
