3. Analysis of digital membrane images

How do you teach a computer to "make an intelligent decision" from a digital image? The difficulty of analyzing an image with a digital computer is often misunderstood by non-specialists, as the answers are intuitive and very naturally solved by a human observer. Current machine vision systems can only respond to a specific need, and are generally unable to adapt to other situations. This explains why image processing research has been very active in the scientific community for over twenty years, for example in the CNRS Information, Signal, Image and Vision (Isis) research group.
