2. Enzymes

Enzymes are biological catalysts, i.e. molecules that accelerate chemical transformations of specific molecules called "substrates". The compound(s) obtained as a result of the enzymatic reaction are called "product(s)". In this document, the enzyme, substrate, product of chemical transformation and inhibitor will be referred to as E, S, P and I respectively. An enzymatic reaction can be represented as follows:
