Advances in integration and encapsulation mean that memory is
now embedded in other components, such as a microprocessor or specialized
processor; this is known as embedded memory. There is also a trend
towards superimposing electronic chips, with all technologies grouped
together under the acronym 3-D.
Embedded memories belong to a technological field that concerns
the integration of memories of all types (SRAM, DRAM, flash EEPROM,
etc.) on the chip of a high-performance logic circuit, usually a general-purpose
or specialized microprocessor such as a DSP (Digital Signal Processor),
network processor or graphics processor. The development of FPGAs
(Field-Programmable Gate Arrays) and SOCs (System On Chip) has encouraged
