6. Use of the phase-locked loop
6.1 Carrier or rhythm recovery
A low-bandwidth loop is a bandpass filter whose bandwidth is twice that of the loop. The loop can therefore be used to filter a complex signal and obtain, at the controlled oscillator, a sinusoidal (or possibly square) signal synchronous with the signal to be "recovered".
6.2 Phase demodulation
The signal applied to the loop, phase-modulated with a modulation index Δϕ, of modulating signal s (t ), is written :
