The RE2020 regulations took effect on January^er 1, 2022. They apply to all new buildings, but are implemented incrementally depending on the type of building. The performance thresholds increase progressively, with milestones in 2025, 2028, and 2030.

Its primary objective is to reduce the energy consumption of new buildings by two-thirds compared to current constructions. The second objective is to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions across the building’s entire life cycle. Finally, it requires buildings to be adapted to climate change by ensuring adequate comfort in the summer, even during heat waves.
