6. Conclusion and prospects for ultrasound in organic chemistry

Ultrasound has found a wide variety of applications, from its use in animal communication (ultrasonic whistle) to the synthesis of organic molecules. In this field, although sonochemistry can provide simple solutions to certain organic synthesis problems, it remains a highly complex subject to analyze from a theoretical point of view.

Nevertheless, even if our understanding of the cavitation phenomenon remains incomplete, it is now possible to rationalize the effects of ultrasound in organic chemistry. Indeed, while some reaction kinetics are increased without any change in the products, others show inversion phenomena, suggesting a more specific intervention of the cavitation phenomenon and, sometimes, even the possible existence of electron transfer processes.

Sonochemistry has long suffered from reproducibility problems, particularly...
