Legal issues raised by traceability

The obligation of traceability, as defined in article 18 of regulation no. 178/2002, ensures or, at the very least, contributes to guaranteeing product safety and fair competition between operators, thanks to the reliability of the information provided.

It is now possible to accurately trace the origin of any product throughout the food chain.

To comply with this traceability obligation, operators in the food sector are now obliged to set up a system that accurately identifies the direct supplier(s) of their products, as well as the direct customer(s) who purchased these products.
