1. Context

This article deals with industrial products intended for the general public, excluding food and pharmaceutical products.

Why focus on safety?

1.1 It's a legal obligation

The general obligation of product safety was introduced in France by the law of July 21, 1983, which also established the Commission de la sécurité des consommateurs (CSC). This was no accident, but the result of a growing concern for consumer safety following a number of high-profile cases. The first recalls of dangerous products date back to the 1970s (decorative lamps with trichloroethylene, pyjamas treated with a carcinogenic product).
